Standard 4: Management

Candidates demonstrate knowledge, skills, and dispositions to plan, organize, coordinate, and supervise instructional technology by applying principles of project, resource, delivery system, and information management.

  • Artifact: PowerPoint vs. Web 2.0 Research Study (PDF, 283kB, opens new window)

Context: Created in May 2010 as a part of EDET 780 Seminar in Educational Technology, this paper describes an observational and experimental research study. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effect of PowerPoint, Prezi, and Wiki on student motivation.

Conditions: This was a group project to design a research study. As this study was developed during a Maymester (3 weeks), the study was not implemented.

Scope: This was a prototype study. The paper outlining the study is available as a PDF.

Role: This was a collaborative group project. Four members worked to determine the research problem and question, gather and incorporate prior research. Individually, I was responsible for the research methods.

ADDIE: Since this was a research study, we followed the AECT guide for planning a research study. Like ADDIE, it provides a methodical procedure to insure that all the necessary components are covered. We began by brainstorming and selecting a topic and then identified the research problem. After a search of prior literature, we defined our research questions. From these we designed plan for the research itself, both the methods of collecting the data and how to analyze it.

    Performance indicators:

3.4.1 Identify and apply standards for the use of instructional technology.

Throughout the process of developing the research study, the group followed the AECT guidelines closely.

4.0.1 Demonstrate leadership attributes with individuals and groups (e.g., interpersonal skills, group dynamics, team building).

During this project, all the team members worked together amicably and communicated constantly with one another. The members each assumed leadership roles at different times with different aspects of this project.

  • Artifact: Computer Procurement and Life Cycle Replacement Plan (PDF, 65kB, opens new window)

Context: Created in Fall 2011 as a part of EDET 746 Management of Technology Resources, this paper outlines a plan for computer procurement and replacement at the USC School of Music. The document explores both internal and external funding options.

Conditions: Computer use in the USC School of Music is unique, since the School’s mission requires both typical office/classroom use computers and special use computers. Special uses include computer music, composition, and recording studio workstations.

Scope: While this is a hypothetical funding plan, it was created with knowledge of the School of Music's mission and is based both on research findings and interview with the school's IT director. The plan is available as a PDF.

Role: I am the sole creator of this document.

ADDIE: Using ADDIE as a guide, I began by researching other funding plans and determining the unique needs of the School of Music. Based on this analysis, the design stage continued in the form of an outline and developed into the full plan. While this plan is not specifically used, several of the elements are implemented in the School of Music computer replacement policies.

    Performance indicators:

3.4.4 Identify and implement effective policies related to the utilization, application, and integration of instructional technologies.

4.1.1, 2.1, 3.1 Apply project management, resource management, delivery system management or information management techniques in various learning and training contexts

Policies concerning resource management (both in the form of funding/budgets and the computer resources themselves) and effective implementation of those resources were researched and integrated into the Computer Procurement and Life Cycle Replacement Plan.
